Marlboro Cigarettes Historical Facts

Did you know that before the rebranding 50s, Marlboro cigarettes were considered as female cigarettes brand? Philip Morris launched the Marlboro brand in 1924 as a woman's cigarette, on the basis of  the slogan "Mild As May". 

In the 1920s, advertising for the cigarette was primarily based around how ladylike the filter cigarette was, in an effort to appeal to the mass market. To this end, the filter had a printed red band around it to hide lipstick stains, containing the logo "Beauty Tips to Keep the Paper from Your Lips". 

At the time, filtered cigarettes were regarded safer than unfiltered cigarettes, but had been until that time only marketed to women.

Men at the time indicated that while they would regarded as switching to a filtered cigarette, they were concerned about being seen smoking a cigarette produced and sold to women.
